Madhubani - Folk Art from Bihar
The modern look of this ancient art is surprising. For centuries women created wonderful images of goddesses and gods along with the plants, vines, and animistic spirits of their local place, but only on walls and floors, where they were regularly erased and repainted. Some time in the 1960s a friend of Indira Gandhi suggested providing them paper and an outlet to sell through the handicrafts emporia the government used to provide opportunities for villagers to earn money. We have collected Madhubani art for decades. Expect us to offer more examples as we dig them up in the Travelers vault.
Rama and Sita
Rama is the symbol of ideal kingship. With Sita they form one of the celestial couples of Hindu mythology; incarnations of Vishnu and Lakshmi, much as Krishna and Radha, or Shiva and Parvati. Rama's home being due west from the Madhubani region (Mithila), he is a common theme in Madhubani art. This piece would be a nice gift to bless a marriage. Hand painted, unmounted, 5-5/8" x 15-3/8"
