Copper is the traditional material for constructing these little braziers, used for performing havan ritual, or Yajna, according to Vedic tradition. Handcrafted by artisans in Banaras, India. Some dents and bends, made for function not for show, they are artlessly beautiful in their own right (rite?).

Gods' Eyes (Netra) - for Hindu Idols

Havan Kunds - containers for Yagna (fire ritual)
Copper is the preferred material for manufacturing these four-sided portable fire-pits used in Hindu fire ritual. Auspicious woods and twigs are used as kindling, sometimes with other aromatic plants or resins. Ghee is offered to feed the fire, while mantras are recited. These Havan Kunds are handcrafted in Benares (Varanasi), with no particular concern for aesthetics, though they have a rough hewn beauty that rises from that unconcern. They are utilitarian and functional, solidly made for repeated use. Hammered not to perfection, but as needed; never mind the bent edge, or the crimped corner. Feel free to hammer yours into shape. Use it on a safe, insulated, non-flammable surface, in a well-ventilated area that is not indoors.

Narmada River Shiva Lingams
Rocks rolling around in the Narmada River bed shape these stones into natural Shiva Lingams, sacred symbols of Lord Shiva, collected for centuries by generations of the same families. It may be that some of these stones are "finished" to remove irregularities, but it's a topic avoided by the sellers of these iconic stones who line the road leading to the great temple of Shiva at Omkareshwar, in Madhya Pradesh. Beautiful natural markings reveal the personalities of the individual lingams.
